Yiing Tan
“Regardless of the challenges you face, it is always valuable to identify the core values you live by. Like a compass, your values can guide you toward the life you aspire to create. I hope everyone has the opportunity to learn this and apply it in their own lives.“
~ Yiing Tan
Professional Experience
Yiing is a child psychologist who works with children and adolescents (aged 6-18) as well as their families. She is especially skilled in conducting neurodevelopmental assessments, including cognitive, academic, ADHD, autism, specific learning disorder, and school readiness assessments. She provides interventions for a variety of presentations, including anxiety (e.g., social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder), depression, emotional regulation and social skills coaching for neurodivergent individuals.
Born and raised in Malaysia, a multicultural country, Ying speaks four languages – English, Mandarin, Malay and Hokkien (conversational) – and enjoys working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Her experience in a special needs education school sparked her interest in psychological assessments. She also had the privilege of working at a women’s and children’s protection center, which deepened her appreciation for client support and advocacy.
Yiing aims to provide a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental environment for everyone who walks through her door, ensuring they feel comfortable and supported. Her goal is to help her clients achieve their goals, guiding them through the process with care and dedication. She values making a positive impact and finds that working in psychology allows her to embody this principle daily. Whether it’s helping a family understand the root causes of their child’s behavioral challenges or guiding them toward appropriate resources, she is committed to supporting others and creating meaningful change.
Yiing takes a flexible approach to therapy and tailors her approach to best suit each client’s needs. She incorporates a variety of tools and techniques to help them achieve their goals, rather than sticking rigidly to one method. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is her usual go-to, she also enjoys incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) skills for its “no struggle” approach – such as learning to accept difficult thoughts and feelings without trying to change or avoid them, allowing individuals to move forward according to their values. She also uses other therapeutic approaches like Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Solution Focused Therapy and Mindfulness Based Therapy.
For Yiing, clear communication is key. She ensures her clients understand the therapy process and know what to expect, ensuring they never feel “lost”, which is particularly important when working with both children and their parents. When appropriate, she uses humour in her sessions, especially with children, to create a relaxed atmosphere and help them feel more comfortable and at ease.
Yiing feels a deep sense of achievement when clients recognise positive changes in their lives or when she sees their progress firsthand. She finds it incredibly rewarding to know she has helped them move toward their goals.
When she isn’t working, Yiing enjoys relaxing at home, playing badminton, and playing online games and boardgames with her friends.
