Stress Counselling Sydney

We can help

Everyone faces some level of stress in life. However, it is possible for stress to become overwhelming and significantly affect one’s overall quality of life, whether it be induced by day-to-day stressors or major life changes.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in 2020, 59% of Australians experienced at least one personal stressor in the last 12 months. People with mental health conditions and people with long-term health conditions are also more likely to experience stressors. Experiencing high levels of stress can not only negatively impact mental health but can also contribute to increased physical health risks such as cardiovascular issues, digestive problems, immune system suppression, sleep disturbances, weight fluctuations and musculoskeletal problems.

Getting the right support to manage your stress can help to provide relief and empower you to regain control of your life.

Signs That You May Need Counselling for Stress

Types of stress:

  • Acute stress – Occurs in response to immediate perceived threats; short-term and usually subsides once the situation is resolved
  • Episodic acute stress – Occurs when someone frequently experiences acute stress
  • Chronic stress – Ongoing stress that persists over a long period of time

When you consistently experience high levels of stress, this can have  a debilitating effect on your life.

If you’re unsure whether the stress you’re feeling is serious enough to warrant professional stress counselling, here are some signs to look out for:

  • Constant feelings of being overwhelmed or an inability to cope
  • Tendency to distance oneself from family or friends
  • Difficulty concentrating on tasks
  • Erratic sleep patterns
  • Feeling fatigued most of the time
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Physical symptoms such as headaches or tense muscles
  • Frequent and extreme mood swings

When it comes to managing stress, stress counselling with a psychologist is one of the most effective treatment methods available. If you are experiencing any of the above, it’s important to seek help – the right support can make a world of difference.

No, referrals are not required from a doctor or other medical professional in order to book a stress counselling session with our psychologists.

We will only require a referral if you wish to claim a Medicare or SIRA/Workcover rebate for the stress counselling service.

How long does stress counselling take for me to see results?

Everyone responds to stress counselling differently, and there’s no fixed period of time for the therapy to start taking effect. It’s important to keep this in mind and set realistic expectations for yourself while attending stress counselling — learning how to manage stress takes time, and it’s important to be compassionate and patient with yourself.

During your first session, your psychologist will create a customised treatment plan based on your specific situation and needs, so you’ll know what to expect. For best results, it’s important to  take on an active role in managing your therapy and put in the work outside of treatment sessions.

What happens during a stress counselling session?

During a stress counselling session, your psychologist provides a safe and non-judgemental space where you will have conversations to understand what is causing you stress. Once both of you have established a clear understanding of how the stress is affecting you, your psychologist will create a treatment plan  and equip you with targeted psychological techniques and  practical stress management strategies.
