Jacob Rath
“Attending the first therapy session is scary for a lot of us. We put ourselves in an emotionally vulnerable place by attending therapy. I think it’s important to remind ourselves how much we can gain from therapy, as well as the fact that the psychologist is a professional trained to help us feel safe and comfortable. Therapy gives us the opportunity to be listened to and understood; it gives us the space to find our way towards growth and healing. Your psychologist wants you to have a positive experience in your first session and will be able to take the reins when you are not sure what to expect or what to say.”

Professional Experience
Jacob is a warm and gentle psychologist who works with adolescents (16 and above) and adults. He treats individuals with addictions, anxiety, parenting issues, complex trauma, work-related issues, health-related issues, sleep disorders and LGBTQ+ issues. He is particularly interested in social anxiety, self-esteem, self-worth, relationship issues and ADHD treatment. He is also especially skilled in treating carers – i.e. people who struggle due to the care that they give to someone else with mental health or addiction issues.
Jacob is passionate about working with people from diverse backgrounds. He is highly aware of demographic factors such as race, culture, socioeconomic status, education, gender, sexuality, privilege, and more. In his practice, he is highly reflective to ensure that he remains open-minded and refrains from imposing his own expectations on his clients.
Jacob is a very gentle person with a knack for making people feel at ease. He has a natural fascination with human nature and a strong drive to help people. He ensures his clients feel listened to and understood, and works to gain a detailed and wholistic understanding of their issues. His aim is to create a safe space where anyone can feel comfortable talking about their deepest issues, while working towards flourishing as individuals.
For Jacob, therapy is about growth and healing. Sometimes the pathway towards growth and healing is obscured; therapy is about uncovering those pathways and discovering where they lead. Jacob patiently and thoroughly helps his clients explore themselves. He helps people explore their past, relationships, values, strengths, goals, habits and subconscious beliefs about themselves and the world around them. Jacob believes that therapy is quite different to teaching or providing information. He doesn’t claim to have secret tips that can’t be found anywhere else; but through the therapeutic journey, he helps his clients piece things together and find personal solutions unique to them.
One of the key approaches that Jacob uses in his sessions, in combination with other therapeutic modalities, is called Socratic Questioning. This approach involves following a line of questioning to help clients thoroughly understand one of their issues. In this process, clients may discover flawed assumptions or logical incongruencies in the way they think about the issue. Through these discoveries, clients can begin to think about their issue differently, which helps with alleviating their emotional pain.
When he isn’t working, Jacob enjoys spending time with friends and family, tennis, badminton, hiking and cooking.
