“Starting therapy can feel unfamiliar or even a little uncomfortable, but you do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. You can simply start by sharing what has been feeling difficult to manage, and together we will work through it. Therapy is a collaborative process, and meaningful change often begins with small steps, developing self-understanding and self-compassion, and feeling genuinely heard in a safe and supportive space.”

Professional Experience

Charlie provides evidence-based psychological assessments and therapy across the lifespan. He works with children (3+), adolescents, adults, and older adults (80+) across a wide range of presentations. He is especially interested in supporting people with emotional regulation, behavioural change, complex trauma, ASD, ADHD, learning disorders, depression, anxiety, OCD, anger management, and chronic illness. He also provides interventions for relationship difficulties, parenting concerns, family issues, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, self-harm, alcohol addiction, grief and loss, work stress, sleep disorders, and pain management.

Charlie has experience working across private practice and youth justice settings, supporting children, adolescents, and adults with complex presentations — including high-risk concerns, neurodivergence, emotional and behavioural difficulties, and complex developmental and relational trauma. He works thoughtfully with clients whose needs may be layered, considering their difficulties within the broader context of their relationships, development, culture, and life experiences. He believes that people’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviours often make sense when viewed through this lens.

Charlie is warm and accepting, and provides a respectful and supportive space where clients feel genuinely heard and accepted. He aims to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves, recognise their strengths and values, and build practical skills to navigate challenges with greater confidence.

Therapy with Charlie is collaborative, non-judgemental, validating, and inclusive. It combines each client’s knowledge, strengths, and lived experience with his clinical expertise. By working as a team, they explore different perspectives and develop practical strategies for challenges that may feel difficult to manage alone.

His therapy is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed approaches. He also draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy.

He often begins by helping clients explore the functions of their thoughts and behaviours, then helps them to develop insight and practical skills to respond more effectively.

Sessions may involve making sense of current difficulties, exploring feelings and perspectives, identifying patterns, planning next steps, and practising strategies through role-play. Therapy progresses at a pace that feels safe and manageable for each individual.

He shares a couple of his favourite quotes:

  • “I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations, I’m here to live up to mine.” – Bruce Lee
  • “Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean me first, it means me too.” – L.R. Knost

Outside of work, Charlie enjoys cooking, hosting dinners at home, spending time with friends, cycling, and reading. He also likes spending time in nature, exercising, watching the rain, and enjoying comforting food — all of which help him feel grounded and find a sense of inner peace.

Throughout his career, Charlie has learnt that many “unhelpful” thoughts, emotions, and behaviours often develop for understandable reasons — they may previously have helped us cope, feel safe, or navigate difficult experiences. By understanding the function behind these patterns, we can shift our focus from self-criticism to curiosity and compassion. Meaningful change often begins not by judging or fighting against ourselves, but by recognising what our responses have been trying to do for us and gradually developing new ways of meeting those needs.
