Therapy can be confusing and there may be lots of hoops to jump through before you even speak to a psychologist. Sometimes, you may need a session or two before intervention begins and some people may feel that it’s a waste of time. However, sticking through the process can be so rewarding and motivating! Having someone notice aspects about your thoughts and/or behaviours can be helpful in better understanding yourself and what you need.

Professional Experience

Tode is a neuroaffirming psychologist who works with children (ages 3 and up), adolescents and adults. He is especially skilled in treating anxiety, neurodiversity, ADHD, intellectual disabilities and ASD. He works with families to understand a new diagnosis or understand why their child may be experiencing difficulties at home and/or school. Tode also enjoys working with queer and gender diverse clients, as he believes that queer-identifying people often have particular strengths that are great to work with.

Tode provides interventions for a wide range of other issues including relationship issues, men’s issues, PTSD, domestic violence, complex trauma, parenting and family issues, anger management, depression, bipolar disorder, suicide prevention, gaming addictions, OCD, personality disorders, grief and loss, self-harm, work stress, weight management issues, disabilities and sleep disorders.

Prior to entering private practice four years ago, Tode was involved with research focusing on community development strategies to help culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations access health services. He strongly believes that it’s crucial to minimise mental health stigma as this causes people to feel “othered” from their community or family, preventing them from accessing the services they need.

Tode is warm and welcoming and focuses on building rapport with his clients, as he believes that trusting one’s psychologist is one of the most important aspects of therapy. As attending an initial session can be quite anxiety-provoking, he always ensures his clients feel comfortable and at ease with him before engaging with intervention. He often carries out his therapy sessions with a joke or a laugh.

Taking a neuroaffirming approach, Tode doesn’t try to “fix” his clients, but instead acknowledges that brain-based differences affect people in certain ways that need to be accommodated within their environments and support network. He finds it deeply meaningful to foster connection and care with his clients, and help them understand more about themselves and reach their goals.

In his sessions, Tode uses a variety of therapeutic modalities including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Therapy and Narrative Therapy. He especially enjoys using an ACT-based approach in his sessions as most things in our lives can be uncontrollable – it’s important to focus on being intentional and mindful with aspects we can control.

He shares this quote from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve… the fear of failure.”

When he’s not working, Tode enjoys reading, kayaking, hanging out with friends and family at the beach or at restaurants.
