Professional Experience

Yan is a passionate and experienced psychologist who works with a wide range of clients from different cultural backgrounds. She takes a client-centred approach and always tailors her interventions to fit her clients’ therapeutic needs and resources. She believes this is the best way to assist each individual in developing the skills to achieve their counselling goals.

Yan is particularly interested in understanding intergenerational conflicts in Australian-Chinese families and providing family and adolescent counselling. She is also experienced in vocational counselling and is passionate about assisting clients, especially new migrants, in establishing employment or education goals in Australia and helping them develop confidence to pursue their ideal careers.

Yan encourages her clients to take a proactive role in counselling while working collaboratively with them to achieve their desired outcomes, which include initial symptom reduction, functional improvement and personal development. She utilises evidence-based counselling techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Therapy starts with a bit of history-taking, psychoeducation and getting your informed consent. Following from that, Yan will take you through in-session skills training – for example, demonstrating how to practice relaxation skills and cognitive restructuring. She will also guide you on how to self-report so that you can measure whether treatment is effective.
